Start with the composition and the fit, then the price. H&M is most useful for a plain cotton tee, simple summer shorts or a specifically documented linen shirt. Similar product names can conceal different fabrics: a heavyweight tee is not necessarily pure cotton, and Premium Selection is not a substitute for the fibre percentages. Hold jersey against the light, inspect the neck rib and seams, and check whether the shoulders and hem sit straight. Thin fabric can be intentional for summer; thinness alone does not predict how many washes a garment will survive.

What to buy, and what to skip

    Look for the exact article number. The Irish shop lists Loose Fit 1232194047 at €14.99 with a 100% cotton body and a 95% cotton/5% elastane rib. By contrast, heavyweight Loose Fit 1229804001 is €22.99 on the euro shop in 70% cotton/30% polyester. Both say heavyweight; they are not the same purchase. Prefer the pure-cotton body when that is what you want against the skin, and check the neckline recovery and opacity rather than paying extra for the adjective.

    The blanket avoid verdict was too broad. Regular Fit Linen shirt 1127523001 is documented as 100% linen, with a back yoke, buttoned cuffs and a rounded hem; its Irish list price is €39.99. That is a credible casual summer option if the fit works. Inspect opacity and seam tension and allow for linen's creasing. Choose viscose for drape or a polyester blend for its specific care needs only when you want those properties, rather than assuming either fibre proves poor quality. This recommendation is for a verified fabric and cut, not every H&M shirt.

    Buy selectively when the exact label gives you the wool content and a care routine you will follow. Wool-blend can mean very different percentages; a small wool addition does not make a mostly synthetic jumper equivalent to merino. Check cuffs for recovery, the underarm seams for loose ends and the surface for fuzz before purchase. Acrylic is a reason to compare alternatives, not proof that a particular item will immediately fail. The price band is a shopping guide, not a promise that a wool model is always available.

    Simple cotton-rich chinos are the sensible starting point. Sit and squat in them: the waistband, rise and thigh allowance matter more than whether the tag says slim or regular. A little elastane can help movement; a large stretch claim does not tell you how well the knees will recover. Check pocket bags, fly stitching and hem allowance. Pass when the fabric pulls shiny across the thigh or the fit relies on constant stretch to stay comfortable.

    Use the existing €13–35 guide for simple summer pairs and aim around €20; check today's local ticket before buying. Choose the waistband and pocket layout for the job: a drawstring for easy casual wear, secure pockets for travel, and enough thigh room to sit without pulling. Read the percentages on linen blends and the body composition on sweat shorts. A soft handle or a cotton label alone does not establish abrasion resistance, and casual shorts should not be mistaken for Move training kit.

  • AvoidJackets & Coats

    Avoid buying for serious weather protection from appearance alone. Synthetic insulation is a legitimate material, not fake down; what matters is the garment's intended use, coverage and documented construction. For rain, look for an explicit waterproof specification and seam treatment rather than relying on water-repellent wording. Try the hood and zip while wearing the layers you need underneath. An occasional city jacket may work, but a winter or hiking recommendation needs more evidence than a padded silhouette.

On the design score

H&M's useful design contribution is access to different proportions at a low entry price: regular, loose and boxy basics let you try a shape without a large commitment. The compromise is that the label covers too many materials and constructions to be a reliable shortcut. The ledger's 4/10 quality score is an overall editorial assessment, not a test result for every product. A pure-linen shirt can be a worthwhile exception without turning the whole shirt rail into a recommendation. Compare the actual garment with UNIQLO or Mango at the same price, especially when H&M's premium ticket approaches those alternatives.
