What to buy, and what to skip

Fine when it's 100% cotton or 100% linen, and most of the wall isn't — which makes this the one shop on the page where the rack you're standing at decides the answer rather than the brand. Real linen does turn up at €30–50 and it's a good price for it; the poly-viscose shirt two hangers along is the same ticket. Read the composition every time.

Chinos and wide-leg trousers are a relative strong point, and the linen trousers fall under the same rule as the shirts — good when the label says 100%.

The widest silhouette choice at the low end: slim, straight, loose, baggy, barrel and cropped denim currently run from €29.95 to €59.95. The useful part is shape, exactly what Zara's design score rewards. Fabric varies just as much as the shirts, although genuine 100% cotton denim does appear in the Origins line. Buy rigid or near-rigid cotton at €30–40; avoid paying €60 for a wash or distressing applied to the same basic construction.

Zara has more silhouette range than a basic sports rail — boxy, relaxed, zip, washed and Athleticz — but no stable fabric standard makes it a category to shop. The current €35.95 'heavyweight' basic is only 63% cotton and 37% polyester; a €49.95 washed hoodie is 55% polyamide, 37% viscose and 8% elastane; a more honest 100% cotton Athleticz crew is €39.95 and already €19.97 in the sale. The €49.95 technical zip hoodie brings stretch and zipped pockets, but its 74/20/6 cotton-polyester-elastane blend has no published weather or activity specification. Buy a specific high-cotton fit below €20–25 in the sale when the proportion is the point. At full price, the better material case is a documented loopback sweatshirt, wool knit or actual technical mid-layer elsewhere.
