ASICS

Start with the job, then the model, then the width. NOVABLAST 6 is the €160 versatile neutral trainer; GEL-NIMBUS 28 is the softer €200 neutral long-run shoe; GEL-KAYANO 33 is the €200 stability option; METASPEED and METASPEED RAY are race tools, not automatic upgrades. SportStyle is a separate archive: GEL-1130 costs €100–110, GEL-NYC €150–160 and GEL-KAYANO 14 €170. ASICS gives a useful fit anchor for your recorded 28 cm foot: its official men's chart maps 28 cm to EU 44 / US 10, the same physical length you wear as Adidas EU 44 2/3 / US 10.5 and Lacoste EU 44 / US 10.5. Width is a second decision—do not size up merely to imitate a wide fitting. In apparel, separate running construction from logo fleece: ACTIBREEZE, a liner, reflective placement, waterproof construction or a packable pattern can earn synthetic fabric; the spiral logo alone cannot.

What to buy, and what to skip

  • StrongFootwear

Usually €100–200Buy at or below €120

The most coherent running-to-lifestyle bridge in this group. Current German prices place the GEL-1130 at €100–110, GEL-NYC at €150–160 and GEL-KAYANO 14 at €170; performance starts with NOVABLAST 6 at €160 and reaches GEL-NIMBUS 28 and GEL-KAYANO 33 at €200, with SUPERBLAST 3 at €220 and race-specific METASPEED RAY at €300. Adidas owns terrace footwear, Nike the broadest cultural archive, Puma gives deeper colourway discounts and New Balance remains the clearest width-and-durability alternative. ASICS wins when you want a real running chassis that also has a credible Y2K archive. Buy GEL-1130 around €90–100, GEL-NYC or GEL-KAYANO 14 near €120–140, or a current runner only after choosing neutral, stability, trail or race and testing the fit. A fashionable GEL-KAYANO 14 retains 2008 technology, but it is no substitute for the current GEL-KAYANO 33 as a running shoe.

  • StrongPerformance & Sport

Usually €32–225Buy at or below €60

Running is the specialist case. NOVABLAST 6 uses the lighter FF BLAST MAX family for a versatile neutral ride; GEL-NIMBUS 28 combines FF BLAST PLUS and PureGEL for soft high cushioning; GEL-KAYANO 33 uses the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM for adaptive stability; METASPEED separates racing geometries, and the Institute of Sport Science tests the system in Kobe. That focus is narrower than Nike or Adidas across all sports, but deeper than Puma or Under Armour in the road-running wardrobe and at least level with New Balance. Apparel earns the verdict when the construction is named: current running shorts run €32–85 with liners and purpose-specific lengths, while ACTIBREEZE, reflective mapping and trail storage solve real problems. Buy the feature layout around €40–60; a technical label does not make every polyester tee premium.

  • DecentShorts

Usually €32–85Buy at or below €40

Core 7-inch shorts begin around €35, Icon around €40, Road 2-in-1 €60 and METARUN reaches €85. Liners, split hems, pocket layout and reflective details give the polyester a job, so this is a more defensible apparel purchase than ASICS fleece. Nike, Adidas and New Balance offer the same category depth, while budget fashion shorts are cheaper but less purpose-cut. Buy Core or Icon around €28–40; pay more only for a liner, storage or ventilation you can name.

  • DecentJackets & Coats

Usually €70–225Buy at or below €100

A real running-jacket ladder, not a coat range. The Core starts at €70, Icon at €80, Road Packable at €100, FUJITRAIL Packable at €120 and METARUN around €175–180; the FUJITRAIL Elite Waterproof is €225 and currently about €157.50. The €80 Icon is honestly only water-repellent, with mesh underarms, reflective details and a dropped hem. That is useful for a run and insufficient for sustained rain. Columbia offers cheaper waterproof value, The North Face a broader trail system and Arc'teryx cleaner shell engineering. Buy a packable running layer near €70–100 or the waterproof FUJITRAIL near €150 only when breathability and running patterning beat the outdoor specialists.

  • AvoidT-Shirts

Separate race tops from cotton merchandise. A technical top with ACTIBREEZE mapping, a light knit and reflective placement belongs under performance; an ordinary spiral-logo crew is the same mistake the page records at Nike, Adidas, Puma and New Balance. H&M and Mango document better value in casual cotton. Buy a specific running top for heat or visibility, or keep the casual ASICS tee below €20.

  • AvoidKnitwear

There is no meaningful wool-knit programme. The shop substitutes fleece crews, hoodies and synthetic long-sleeve running layers for sweaters, as Nike, Adidas, Puma, New Balance and Under Armour do. Those garments may work in performance or sweats; they are not knitwear in the fibre sense used here. Buy ASICS below the ankle and buy merino from UNIQLO, Mango, Benetton or Massimo Dutti.

  • AvoidSweats & Hoodies

The current German rail makes the trade visible: logo crews are about €55, logo fleece hoodies €65–70 and the SportStyle hoodie €100. A representative fleece hoodie is 73% cotton / 27% polyester; another €65 style is 88% cotton / 12% polyester. These are serviceable warm-up layers, not extensions of GEL or FF BLAST. Lyle & Scott offers documented 100% cotton loopback around the same sale money, and Mango, Benetton or UNIQLO can supply real merino. Buy below €40 if the fit wins; do not pay €100 for the running reputation on ordinary fleece.

On the design score

ASICS reaches design 7 by turning running mechanics into a recognisable footwear language. Kihachiro Onitsuka began the company in Kobe in 1949; Onitsuka, GTO and JELENK merged into ASICS in 1977, the name taken from Anima Sana In Corpore Sano. GEL entered running shoes in 1986, Shigeyuki Mitsui's GEL-LYTE III introduced its split tongue in 1990, and the GEL-KAYANO line began in 1993. The 2008 GEL-KAYANO 14 translated impact and forward movement into layered mesh, synthetic ribs and visible cushioning; its 2020 return, with Kiko Kostadinov curating the first UB1-S version, helped make technical Y2K running form a current lifestyle language. Remove the spiral mark and a split-tongue GEL-LYTE III or silver-mesh GEL-KAYANO 14 can still be placed. That is real authorship level with Adidas, Nike, Puma and New Balance at 7, though less culturally foundational than Jordan or Vans at 8 and overwhelmingly concentrated below the ankle. Quality is 7, above Adidas, Nike and Puma at 6 and level with New Balance. The Kobe Institute of Sport Science, PureGEL, FF BLAST foams, 4D GUIDANCE, ASICSGRIP and distinct neutral, stability, trail and racing families are current engineering rather than archive theatre. Independent lab testing of the preceding NOVABLAST 5 measured 0.9 mm outsole wear against a 1.1 mm running-shoe average; the upper and heel also tested strongly. The ceiling is high, while €55–100 cotton-poly fleece and ordinary logo jersey keep the entire company below specialist technical brands at 8 or 9. Appeal is 7. Performance Running remained ASICS' largest category at ¥363.5bn in 2025, while SportStyle rose 43.6% to ¥141.3bn; GEL-KAYANO 14, GEL-NYC and GEL-1130 now create a fashion reaction as well as a runner's one. That is warmer and more current than Puma's 6, level with Adidas, Nike and New Balance, but less universal than the page's 8-point icons.
